How This Place Value Cut and Paste Activity Helps Learners
Let’s be honest…
Anytime scissors and glue are involved, learners suddenly become just a little more excited to practice math. (Funny how that works!) I’ve witnessed this time and time again in my 12 years of teaching.
Instead of simply circling answers on a worksheet, learners are actively thinking about where the digit belongs before placing each doughnut into the correct box.
That extra movement helps reinforce place value in a meaningful way while making practice feel more like a game than another worksheet. AND we know, kids love games!
This is really a simple and easy way for students to practice this skill.
A Simple 3-Step Activity for Tens and Ones Place Value Recognition
Using this printable really couldn’t be easier.
1. Cut
Learners cut out each numbered doughnut, giving them an opportunity to strengthen fine motor skills while preparing the activity.
2. Think
Next, learners decide whether the focus digit is in the tens place or the ones place. This encourages learners to slow down, look carefully at each number, and build a stronger understanding of place value.
3. Sort & Glue
Finally, learners glue each doughnut into the correct box. By the end of the activity, they’ve practiced identifying place value while creating a completed sorting activity they can be proud of because their knowledge of place value allowed them to complete confidently. Also, the doughnuts just make it a fun activity.
Sweet, simple, and effective!
