Once students finish decorating, encourage them to read the sentence aloud:

One of my favorite things about this activity is that it practices several important skills all at once.
As students identify the first letter of their name, they’re strengthening uppercase letter recognition and beginning to understand that letters have meaning. Writing their name gives them valuable handwriting practice and helps build confidence with one of the first words every child learns to write. Even if they cannot write it, tracing it can also have the same benefits.
Decorating the large letter also strengthens fine motor muscles as children color, glue, tear paper, or place small stickers. Those little hand muscles are working hard, even if students simply think they’re making their artwork look beautiful!
Perhaps the best part is that this activity helps children take ownership of their learning. When something includes their own name, participation usually comes naturally because the activity feels personal and exciting and they are able to pick what they use to decorate it with.
